Panax vietnamensis and Agarwood as source of health beneficial, species, prized herbal medicine, very valuable, considered threatened.
Panax vietnamensis (Vietnamese ginseng) is the southernmost Panax species known for the most valuable ginseng in the world.
Ginseng plants belong only to the genus Panax. Cultivated species include Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng), Panax notoginseng (South China ginseng), and Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng).
Ginseng is found in cooler climates – Korean Peninsula, Northeast China, and Russian Far East, Canada and the United States, although some species grow in warm regions – South China ginseng being native to Southwest China and Vietnam.
Panax vietnamensis faces a number of threats to its survival as a species in Vietnam. With increased demand from the herbal medicine industry, locals have over-harvested the plant in the wild.
The species is slow-growing, taking around 10 years to reach maturity. Larger-scale commercial farming operations have been affected by theft of the plants.
False ginseng seeds have been introduced to the Mount Ngọc Linh area in an attempt to be grown and sold as P. vietnamensis. The introduced strains mature in a much shorter time and can be grown at lower altitudes. Scientists are concerned that these strains may mix with and compromise purebred P. vietnamensis.
Phytoconstituents: Attele et al reported the usage of ginsengs for health benefits. Vietnamese ginseng is rich source of novel
biologically active chemical constituents with diverse structural architecture. Vienamese gingeng is known to contain both gingeng
saponins and the ocotillol-type saponins.
Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is a complex, highly sequential series of protective reaction induced by endo-and exogenous stimuli.
Natural products from plant origin possessing enormous ethno-pharmacological importance have been given the utmost priority as treatments for inflammation and allergic reactions.
Many effective pharmacological agents are employed to treat inflammatory diseases and new pharmacological targets continue to be discovered.
Recently some compounds isolated from Panax vietnamensis are found to be effective against inflammatory reactions.
In another study, vina-ginsenoside R2 (VR2) and majonoside R2 (MR2) isolated from Panax vietnamensis were screened for their anti-inflammatory potential and metabolites in mouse peritoneal macrophages model stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and results revealed that VR2 displayed cytotoxicity against peritoneal macrophages. MR2, pseudoginsenoside RT4, and ocotillol inhibited LPS-stimulated transcription factor (NF)-κB activation, and expression of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin (IL)-1.
These three ginsenosides also inhibited LPS-stimulated cyclooxygenase-2 andinducible NO synthase expression, and phosphorylation of NF-κB signal molecules IL-1 receptorassociated kinase1 and tumor growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 in peritoneal macrophages.
